Flipped Classrooms

Goal: To enhance student higher-order learning by reversing the traditional model of a classroom, focusing class time on student understanding rather than on lecture.

Context: Flipped classroom in the Blended learning environment for delivering instructional content is a more advanced solution for promoting higher-order cognition. Students in flipped classes access and watch lecture videos, read course handouts, and come to the classroom to complete activities such as group work, assignments, discussions, projects, or other exercises. The flipped classroom model can be seen as a tool for the implementation of blended learning.

Practice: The flipped classroom approach in the blended learning environment is extensively used in the department and exploited to its best since the pandemic, where interaction is more collaborative and discussion-oriented.

The following are the steps involved in the implementation of flipped classroom methodology in our department:
  • Students are instructed to enroll in the Google Classroom for each subject in the semester through a link shared by the concerned class teacher.
Note: The model encourages students to prepare before class by accessing online content, thereby enabling more meaningful classroom interactions.

Flipped Classroom Process

  • Students are instructed to review them after each session.
  • The concerned course faculty upload instructions, lecture material, and videos in Google Classroom. The students are instructed to go through the same. After the completion of each session, the students must submit the quiz in Google Classroom, by which the responses of students are recorded, and grades for each student are issued. The students are encouraged to hold discussions over the topic during face-to-face interaction in the classroom with the faculty.
  • Faculty members conduct virtual class meetings for interaction through meeting applications (e.g., Google Meet), which is integrated with LMS.
  • Assignments are disseminated through LMS.
  • After completion of each unit, students are required to submit the assignment for each subject.

Note:

1. The academic sessions during the formative stages of graduation for the 2019-2023 and 2020-2024 admitted batches were severely affected by the pandemic.

2. The academic rigor was sustained during the course period through the implementation of flipped classroom pedagogy.
