NBA Has Granted 3 Years Accreditation For Four UG Programs: B.Tech. (CSE, ECE, EEE, MECH)

About the department

The Department of Civil Engineering established in the year 2010 with approved annual intakeof 60, is one of the oldest department in the Institute offering B. Tech and M. Tech (Structural Engg.) degrees. The current approved annual intake of the department is 60 for B. Tech. and 24 for M. Tech. (Structural Engg.). The department is nurtured in the hands of Prof. K. Yugandhar Reddy, Dr. I. Srinivasa Reddy (Ph.D, IIT KGP), Prof. K. Srinivas, Dr. C. Ravi Kumar Reddy (Ph.D, NITW) and Dr. M. Satish Kumar (HOD) . The Department has been producing some of the best civil engineers from past four years. The department has been offering the finest and unparalleled quality of civil engineering education not only in the Guntur district but also in the entire JNTUK region. The students graduating from the department every year are occupying some of the top positions in the government and private sectors both within and outside the country and are also heading their own enterprises. Emphasis on practical education coupled with strong concept oriented teaching-learning process has been the backbone of the department ever since its inception. The excellent infrastructure is further an added advantage.

The department has 11 number of well established laboratories housed spaciously with excellent natural lighting and ventilation. All the laboratories are well maintained by technically qualified personnel. During the practical classes, every student is trained individually to handle and use the equipment in all the laboratories to get complete hands-on experience. The department also offers course work in GIS and GPS with practical training in the use of relevant software and equipment. The Computer Aided Analysis and Design (CAAD) laboratory is fully equipped with licensed software’s for drawing plans, structural analysis and design, structural drawings and quantity estimation. The department has fully equipped laboratories for structural engineering, highway engineering, concrete technology, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering and geology along with CAAD laboratory. Apart from regular curriculum, these laboratories are thoroughly utilized by every student for carrying out their final year project works. Some of the student projects are also getting published as research papers in international journals.

In several technical and paper presentation contests conducted throughout the country, the students of this department have been winning a good number of prizes every year. The department also conducts an annual national level paper presentation contest SAMKALP on 15th September (Engineer’s Day) every year, drawing students from several engineering colleges. The individual attention given to students in the academic and other student-related activities has been immensely helpful in keeping the civil engineering students of KHIT stay far ahead of students graduating from other Institutes. The department also conducts workshops, seminars and guest lectures by eminent persons from academia and industry.

The department conducts faculty development programs (FDP) for the teachers to update their domain knowledge. The teaching staff of the department is also encouraged to attend seminars, conferences and workshops. As part of its social responsibility, the department has been conducting programs to train personnel from construction industry; masons.

The department has a strong consultancy wing offering services in all specializations of civil engineering to several government and private companies/organizations, all over the state over the last four years.

Description

STRENGTH OF MATERIALS LAB

Universal Testing Machine

A universal testing machine (UTM), also known as a universal tester, materials testing machine or materials test frame, is used to testthe tensile strength and compressive strength of materials. The "universal" part of the name reflects that it can perform many standard tensile and compression tests on materials, components, and structures (in other words, that it is versatile). It operates on hydraulic pressure. Maximum load capacity is 400 kN.

Torsion Testing Machine

A torsion test can be conducted on most materials to determine the torsional properties of the material. Modulus of rigidity of a given specimen can be determined.

CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY LAB

Compression Testing Machine

The machine is used to test the compressive strength of the concrete cubes and Split tensile strength of cylindrical concrete specimen.Maximum load capacity is 2000kN

Mortar cube vibrating machine

The motor cube vibrating machine is used to compact the concrete specimen to decrease the amount of void percentage.

FLUID MECHANICS AND HYDRAULIC MACHINERY LAB

Pelton wheel turbine

It is an impulsive – type water turbine. Pelton wheels are the preferred turbine for hydro-power, when the available water source has relatively high hydraulic head at low flow rates, where the Pelton wheel geometry is most suitable.

Multi Stage Centrifugal Pump

Centrifugal pumps are used to transport fluids by the conversion of rotational kinetic energy to the hydrodynamic energy of the fluid flow. The rotational energy typically comes from an engine or electric motor.

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING LAB

California Bearing Ratio Test

The California bearing ratio (CBR) is a penetration test for evaluation of the mechanical strength of natural ground, sub-grades and base-courses beneath carriageway construction.

Direct Shear Test

A direct shear test is a laboratory or field test used by geotechnical engineers to measure the shear strength properties of soil material, or of discontinuities in soil.

TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING LAB

Ductility testing machine

The ductility of bituminous material is the distance in centimeters to which it will elongate before breaking when a briquette specimen of the materials is pulled at a specified speed and at specified temperature. It consists of Testing machine Mould made up of brass, Water bath preferably with a thermostat, 10lit capacity and maintained with in 0.10 oC of the specified temperature Thermometer 2500 oC capable of reading up to 0.010 oC.

Los Angele’s Abrasion Testing Machine

The Los Angeles Abrasion Testing Machine consists of a hollow steel cylinder, closed at both ends, having an inside diameter of 28" and inside length of 20". The cylinder is mounted on stub shafts attached the ends of the cylinder but not entering it and mounted in such a manner that it may be rotated about its axis in a horizontal position. An opening in the cylinder is provided for the introduction of the test sample. The opening can be closed dust-tight with the removable cover bolted in place. Toughness of aggregate can be accessed.

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING LAB

BOD Incubator

Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD, also called biological oxygen demand) is the amount of dissolved oxygen needed (i.e., demanded) by aerobic biological organisms to break down organic material present in a given water sample at certain temperature over a specific time period. The BOD value is most commonly expressed in milligrams of oxygen consumed per litre of sample during 5 days of incubation at 20 °C and is often used as a surrogate of the degree of organic pollution of water

Flocculation Jar Test

The jar test – a laboratory procedure to determine the optimum pH and the optimum coagulant dose. A jar test simulates the coagulation and flocculation processes.

ENGINEERING GEOLOGY LAB

The lab deals with study of mineralogy and petrology. Properties of different types of rocks and minerals are investigated. Students gain knowledge of structure of folds and faults.

SURVEYING FIELD WORK

Standard Vernier Theodolite

Theodolite is an instrument which is used to measure horizontal angles and vertical angles. Length differences can also be calculated by using these angles which occur in Theodolite.

Total Station

It is a complete solution to calculate area, distances and angles. It is an efficient and economical equipment to survey various types and shapes of lands.

GIS & CAD LAB

Standard Vernier Theodolite

The basic linear elastic analysis of beams, columns and frames is done with the help of STAAD software. Application of remote sensing and geographical information system for analyzing various maps by Arc GIS software.
